Character Bio
Henry Louis Mencken (1880 - 1956)

H.L. Mencken is willing to expound on his curmudgeonly perspective on the folly of life in America, whether that means the foolishness of his fellow writers or the foibles of his fellow man. Topics at his command include politics and religion, women and marriage, music & literature. If you're in need of a good laugh and shrewd insights into America and Americans, this American original will supply plenty of both: "Puratinism is the haunting fear that someone, somewhere, might be happy." Henry Louis Mencken began his newspaper career at the former Baltimore Morning Herald in 1899. From there he became an editor at Sun papers and went on to become a famous newspaperman, writer, critic and magazine editor. Mencken is known for his candid opinions on a variety of topics including politics, religion, women, marriage, music, literature and in his day, Franklin D. Roosevelt and the New Deal.
